# How to Read a Pump Curve Without Being an Engineer

 Nov 3, 2026, 7:00:01 AM

Selecting the right pump for an application can feel intimidating, especially when you're looking at a pump performance curve for the first time. With lines, charts, and technical terminology, pump curves often appear more complicated than they really are.

The good news is that you don't need an engineering degree to understand the basics. Learning how to read a pump curve can help facility managers, maintenance personnel, and operators make more informed decisions about equipment performance, troubleshooting, and replacement planning.

By understanding a few key concepts, you can gain valuable insight into how your pump is operating and whether it's performing as expected.

## **What Is a Pump Curve?**

A pump curve is a graphical representation of a pump's performance characteristics. It shows how a pump will perform under various operating conditions and helps determine the relationship between flow rate, head, efficiency, power consumption, and other performance factors.

Manufacturers develop pump curves through testing to provide a reliable reference for equipment selection and operation.

While pump curves may contain multiple data points and performance indicators, there are a few key areas that are most important for everyday users to understand.

## **Understanding Flow Rate**

The horizontal axis, or bottom axis, of a pump curve typically represents flow rate, usually measured in gallons per minute (GPM).

Flow rate indicates how much liquid the pump moves over a given period of time.

As you move from left to right on the curve:

- Flow increases
- The pump moves more fluid
- System demands become greater

One of the first questions when evaluating a pump application is:

*How much flow does the system require?*

The answer helps determine where the pump should operate on the curve.

## **Understanding Head**

The vertical axis, or side axis, represents total dynamic head (TDH), usually measured in feet.

Head is a measure of the energy required to move fluid through a system. It accounts for factors such as:

- Elevation changes
- Pipe friction
- Pressure requirements
- Valves and fittings

A common misconception is that a pump creates flow alone. In reality, a pump must overcome the system's head requirements to achieve the desired flow rate.

Generally speaking:

- Higher head requirements result in lower flow rates.
- Lower head requirements allow higher flow rates.

The main pump performance curve illustrates this relationship.

## **Finding the Operating Point**

One of the most important concepts on a pump curve is the operating point.

The operating point is where the pump curve intersects with the system curve. This point represents the actual flow and head at which the pump will operate.

Think of it as the balance point between:

- What the pump can deliver
- What the system requires

If system conditions change due to valve adjustments, pipe modifications, or equipment wear, the operating point can shift.

Understanding the operating point helps determine whether a pump is properly sized for its application.

## **What Is the Best Efficiency Point (BEP)?**

Most pump curves include efficiency contours or efficiency lines. These indicate how efficiently the pump converts mechanical energy into fluid movement.

The highest efficiency area is called the Best Efficiency Point (BEP).

Operating near the BEP provides several advantages:

- Reduced vibration
- Lower energy consumption
- Reduced wear on components
- Improved reliability
- Longer equipment life

While pumps can operate away from their BEP, doing so for extended periods may lead to higher maintenance costs and reduced performance.

For most applications, selecting a pump that operates as close as possible to its BEP is considered a best practice.

## **Understanding Horsepower Requirements**

Many pump curves also include brake horsepower (BHP) information.

This portion of the curve shows how much power is required to operate the pump at different flow rates.

As flow increases, power requirements often increase as well.

Understanding horsepower requirements helps ensure that the motor driving the pump is properly sized and capable of meeting system demands.

An undersized motor may struggle to operate the pump effectively, while an oversized motor may increase unnecessary operating costs.

## **Why Pump Curves Matter**

Pump curves aren't just useful during equipment selection. They can also provide valuable insight into existing system performance.

Reviewing a pump curve can help identify:

- Oversized pumps
- Undersized pumps
- Energy inefficiencies
- System changes affecting performance
- Potential reliability concerns

If a pump isn't delivering the expected flow or pressure, comparing actual operating conditions to the manufacturer's pump curve can often help pinpoint the cause.

## **When to Ask for Help**

While understanding the basics of a pump curve is valuable, selecting or troubleshooting pumping equipment often involves additional factors such as system curves, fluid characteristics, NPSH requirements, and application-specific operating conditions.

That's why working with experienced pump specialists can help ensure equipment is properly matched to the application; that’s where our professionals at Hayes Group can help.

## **The Hayes Group Advantage**
